summary of WQ: This webquest requires students to understand and use percents in a real-world situation. A soldier needs help buying Christmas gifts for his family. He enlists friends to help him search for the perfect gifts and at the same time stay within a budget. Students will watch videos to help them learn how to use percents to find discount, sale price, tax, and final price. Percent of decrease is also a possible question that may arise. An informative assessment will be given and discussed before the shopping begins. Students will keep their data organized into a spreadsheet and then all the information collected will be put into a proposal that will be sent via the internet to their soldier friend, Jack. They will be given a choice of how to present their proposal to Jack using a list of guidelines. These proposals will then be presented to the class. Students will then extend this webquest by connecting their work to proportional relationships by working on a follow-up worksheet.
Sometimes the students will find that the original price and sale price are given, but the percent of discount is not given. This provides an excellent opportunity to teach/reinforce percent of increase and decrease, as well as the percent proportion.
